In summer, running the fan counterclockwise takes advantage of this effect, which typically means you can raise your thermostat a few degrees without noticing a drop in comfort. In winter, the seasonal reversal switch earns its keep. Flipping the fan to spin clockwise at low speed pushes the warm air that collects near the ceiling back down into the living space. Since fans move air rather than condition it, turn them off when a room is empty.
