An energy recovery ventilator works by pulling in a current of fresh outdoor air and then using a counterflow current of stale indoor air to either heat it or cool it. The fresh air arrives in the house either heated or cooled to match the indoors. This means you can let in fresh air during winter and not have to over-tax the heater, and let in fresh air in summer and not need to strain the air conditioner.
